In progress

Current mood:content

Currently working on full-band tracks with Al Weatherhead at Sound of Music in Richmond. This next album is going to be positively orchestral. And awesome.

Sound of Music

The weekend of November 17, the Egg converges at Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, Virginia, to record tracks for our second album. Keith and I will be pulling up in the Golf sometime Friday; Jake, Bob, Tim, and Nathan are hauling ass all night in Tim’s Ford BRV [Big Red Van] and will be showing up around the same time as the first Saturday-morning cartoons. (Maybe The Snorks?) Saturday and Sunday we lay down basic tracks with the great engineer Al Weatherhead, who’s recorded some amazing stuff for personal heroes Sparklehorse, Mary Timony, and our friend Kendall’s band Mascott. (Kendall and I did a duet for the 2005 Thunderegg Song of the Week project, “Say We Did.”)

Then the boys all go home and Al and I have three days of overdubs, possibly joined by friend and pianist (pronounced “penis”) Ken Moon on Wednesday.

Then I’m happily spending Thanksgiving at my friend Tom’s parents’ house in D.C. Then back to Richmond for three days of mixing. And by Sunday, November 26, it is quite possible that the second Thunderegg album will be mostly finished. (We’ve already recorded five nice tracks with Nathan at the Shed in Manchester, CT.)

So we are very excited.

P.S. Cross-references on myspace include Sound of Music Recording Studios; Maki, Al Weatherhead’s band; David Lowery, founder of Sound of Music; Keith “Pile of Wood” Woodfin; Mascott; and Ken Moon. Jake also has a myspace page, and an elaborate one at that, but I couldn’t create a link because it doesn’t have a published URL. It’s kind of exclusive that way.

slack achieved

Not doing much of anything today. I just watched a couple episodes of Mr. Show and now I’m listening to Harry Nilsson* and polishing up my collection of antique collectibles. In a while I’ll take my (EK’s) guitar out to Chelsea Guitars for a set-up.

Rockstar life!

* head bobbing to the end of “Spaceman”

Casper and the Cookies

It was a good week. My only regret is that I missed the Casper and the Cookies show at CMJ Thursday night. They’re a great band from Athens, Georgia, as well as old friends of my girlfriend, who lived down there for 13 years. I had to work. It was interesting work, copyediting a book of interviews with hip-hop legends, but it kept me at my desk till three in the morning.

I like the Cookies because they’re not just fun and melodic and down-to-earth: They also have chops. Maybe I’ll try catching them somewhere else. This week’s not as busy, and I do have a car…
